typhoon wha??

sis, did you ever wonder why our typhoon names are all of a sudden masculine (ex. milenyo), and even more recently western?

well i did, so i researched on it (nerd alert!)

apparently, in 1963, our country started naming typhoons coming our way with women's names ending in "ng".

i was told before that they used women's names because we were just generally more "moody" like the typhoon.

sexist, dontchatink?  that's probably why they changed the scheme in 2002.  (think gma had anything to do with it??)

now, typhoons in the northwest pacific adopted a new naming scheme too -- where each country contributed 10 names to the roster.

the first 5 names we contributed were:

1. malaksi
2. danas
3. hagupit
4. lupit
5. talas

wha?

we've also already named our own typhoons for the next 4 years.

in 2011, we're gonna experience typhoons "chedeng", "tisoy" and if we reach 26 typhoons, "zigzag".

hihihihihi.

read more about it here.
