i guess there's always been something about that era that has always appealed to us. and of course i can't talk about art deco, art nouveau without mentioning one of my favorite artists, Alphonse Mucha.
i visited the Mucha Museum in Prague last year and absolutely loved every piece i saw. i went crazy in the museum shop, too, trying to decide what to take home with me.
here are some of his works...
he also did a stained glass window (the third window on the left side) in St. Vitus's Cathedral in the Prague castle area. he actually painted, rather than stained, the glass to get the colors he wanted.
i also got to visit where he was buried in Vysehrad. he lies in a mausoleum for more than 50 honored Czech luminaries from the arts and sciences. the "winged genius" that guards them hovers above an inscription that means "although they have died, they yet speak". how poetic.
i was so inspired by mucha that i based my tattoo on his works :)
i designed an art nouveau-inspired dress for yale too..
don't we just LOVE art nouveau?
